Wet

The operative word for this spring has been "wet".  In April, Rochester received 5.81 inches of rain, breaking a record last set in 1929 at 5.41 inches.  While flying this morning, evidence of residual water was visible everywhere.

The fields were still quite wet.

Swamps were swampier.

And the muddy Genesee river backed up behind Mt Morris Dam at the north end of Letchworth was just shy of the top.  For reference, the dam is 230 feet high and 1028 ft wide.  Usually, the river is just a trickle behind this monstrosity and I used to wonder why the dam was necessary at all.  Now I get it.  Seeing is believing.

I departed Le Roy early in the day, flew through Rochester airspace, and took a pleasure cruise along the shoreline of Lake Ontario (above, Little Sodus Bay).  At least, it should have been a pleasure cruise.  Moderate chop kept me on my toes most of the way, but it was so good to take wing under sunny skies that I just didn't care.

I did some touch-and-go landings at Oswego County Airport.  It was a good day for it.  While using runway 24, the AWOS reported wind varying from 270 to 290°, 8 to 14 knots, gusting to 22.  Not terrible, but a nice little bit of exercise and the landings were all good (i.e., smooth, on center line, well controlled, and touchdown was always on the upwind wheel).

When someone says "private jet", I'll bet this is not what most people imagine.  I was a little surprised that someone would leave their baby parked out on the ramp at Oswego County like this.  Pretty cool toy, though.

  1. The private jet is the L-29 Delfin ("Dolphin") trainer, it was produced in the early 1960's, and was used as both a primary jet trainer and as an advanced combat/weapons trainer.

It looked liked a great day to fly and as always excellent pictures.
